Froe Woodworking Tool

A froe (or frow), shake axe or paling knife is a tool for cleaving wood by splitting it along the grain. it is an l-shaped tool, used by hammering one edge of its blade into the end of a piece of wood in the direction of the grain, then twisting the blade in the wood by rotating the haft (handle).. This is the tool used by colonial settlers to split shingles, shakes, and lumber for homes in early america. today the shingle froe is still a primary tool in many traditional woodworking projects which require riving, like windsor chair spindles and spoons.. Shingle froe. many traditional woodworking jobs require cants, blocks, or quartered logs to be riven with more precision and finesse than a maul and splitting wedge permit before the drawknife and spokeshave take over..
